Why Radio?
In all honesty, Radio found me. It was never part of my plans. Instead it was my friend, Sli, that thought I belong behind the microphone and forced me to do a Demo which I started submitting to Radio stations and to my surprise I got my first gig. I eventually fell in love with it and as I continued with the journey, I grew to learn how intimate and special it was. And also how it brings us together as well as the major role it plays in society.

Which other radio stations have you worked for?
I would like to acknowledge and remember Radio Al-Ansaar, a muslim community Radio station that gave me the feels and the pressures of being live and broadcasting for the public. I learned a lot there, it made way for the better me and prepared me for greener pastures. Sending all my love to my then mentor- Salma Kazi-Wahab.

Did you study radio/Journalism?
I studied Journalism and Media Studies and graduated Summa Cum-Laude. Hence I’m a qualified journalist today who is killing it on the airwaves and in the sector at large (Lol).

Besides radio, what other projects are you currently busy or involved with?
I am a published Author, My first book called “Morning After Dark” gave me the status. I am currently working on my second book titled “Losing A Man With A Womb- Words to my fellow orphans” which is close to my heart and another painful production I’ve ever had to bring to life. There is also a foundation that I’m also working on establishing, it was inspired by my first book. I also do freelance voice over work and I’m a voice actor. There is just so much, should I go on?

Who is your South African Radio journalist icon?
Dineo Mphahlele from East Coast Radio. I am obsessed with her and her work. And I would love to work with her sometime. She played a major role in developing my love for storytelling and news anchoring.

What can we expect from you in the next 5 years?
Television , Television and Television. I will be in front of that camera and will stop at nothing to pursue it.

How often do you listen to other radio stations and which radio station do you usually listens to?
I do not listen to Radio and I feel embarrassed.

What has working on radio as a journalist has taught you?
A lot. It has taught me respect. You respect the craft and understand that it’s what puts food on the table. You work with different kinds of people which you need to be understanding and accommodative of. I have also learnt that you touch the hearts of many people and you need to carry yourself a certain way. Compassion is very important as well. And lastly, you just never stop learning. There is always something to learn , from the tea lady in the office to the chief executive of the organisation.

What advice can you give to aspiring journalists?
Never take no for an answer and believe in yourself. Grow thick skin and do your best in everything you do. You can achieve anything you put your mind to as long as there is courage, hard work, determination and self-belief. Even these elements would score you groundbreaking strories.
